Quirky party chat
After first being introduced in 2019 Garfield Smith first came to a meal with 9others in 20211.
After a career with a few of London and the world’s big law firms Garfield set up on his own. From the start Garfield, and his colleague Caroline Hughes, built a distributed team of 15+ lawyers, very often parents with kids who can do the work 10am-3pm then again bits after kids’ bedtimes. Pretty smart, eh?
Matthew and Katie caught up with Garfield at last week’s Winter Party and he told us something rather quirky.
We don’t hear quirky things from lawyers very often so we wanted to share it here…

Meet Garfield, an AI chatbot which enables people to collect invoices of up to £10k through the English Small Claims Court easier and quicker.
And yes, it’s named after Garfield…
The founder of (AI) Garfield is Phil Young, a former colleague and friend of (human) Garfield and he named (AI) Garfield after (human) Garfield because he said (human) Garfield is the greatest technology lawyer he’d ever worked with!
What does (human) Garfield think about it all?
