We say — a lot — that your success requires the aid of others. That’s been our line from the very start back in 2011. To be successful you need the help of other people.
Here’s a quote from our book, ‘Find your 9others’.
“And the best way to get help is to begin by helping other people. By starting a startup you’ll be doing something difficult and something new. Most of the time there’s no single correct answer, and you will be under huge pressure to make decisions and show leadership. There will be difficult conversations that will make you uncomfortable. You’ll probably want to give up quite often, and you’ll realise that you can’t do all this alone.
You’ll need others”.
The thing is though, no matter how much help you get it’s you who has to make the inevitable tough decisions. It often happens that when someone shares a challenge at a meal with 9others half the table says do one thing, and the other half says do the complete opposite.
One of our favourite quotes is, “Your courage starts flourishing the day you realise no one is coming to save you”1.
And a favourite, amongst many, from Seth Godin is this from 2011: “You don’t need more time …you just need to decide”.
Is this a paradox? The 9others paradox?
You need others to help you become successful. And a trusted network is something no entrepreneur should be without.
But *you* need to decide.
You need to *decide*.
The first 9others podcast — here — was all about decision making; some brilliantly easy, some stupidly difficult.
We’ve been thinking a lot about this in the last few weeks.
9others is a trusted network and we try to help each other solve challenges. And it never ceases to amaze us how helpful and generous people who’ve been to 9others are.
Solving challenges is an open-ended, never-ending challenge in itself.
Decisions are similar — there’s always another just ahead.
So we’re noodling on this. Yes, *you* have to decide. But maybe something can help.
