Making the world a better place to hang around in
Robbie Dale claims he can’t remember when we first met, but I do — it was when I messaged him in response to a call on the Causr network, founded by mutual friend James Eder. That message was about a podcast I’d been considering for 9others, and it turned out to be a good starting point, because in 2019 Robbie wrote, presented and pieced together ‘Brilliantly Easy, Stupidly Difficult’ a podcast about the choices we make and the lives we end up living. It featured a whole host of guests from the 9others community and beyond, and it was very positively received — have a listen here — it’s really good.

There’s more…
Since then, Robbie has been a key collaborator on the 9others book ‘Find Your 9others’ helping me and Katie turn some scrappy ideas1 into a slick finished product. Aside from 9others he’s helped me with my investing side of things here (and lots more behind the scenes), and others from the 9others community find a clear and compelling voice for a number of startups, projects and personal brands.
What do you need to know about Robbie?
Robbie is easy to work with, sharp, full of ideas, but very down to earth. As co-founder of his own business, Today Do This, he knows the ins and outs of getting something off the ground and maintaining it through the ups and downs of entrepreneurial endeavour. His has a refreshing and practical approach, but he’ll also really push you to see the full creative potential of whatever it is you’re working on.
Snap him up
After I spoke to Robbie this week he said he had some space for some interesting projects (if you want to make use of him, snap him up, his details are at the end).
Plus I also happened to speak with a couple of 9others regulars who have worked with Robbie recently…
On Monday I asked John Graham and he said that Robbie helped him launch OKAM, a new approach to Google Ads management.
John said:
“I’d had this idea [for OKAM] for years. I knew it was good, but I didn’t know what to do with it. Robbie helped me articulate that idea in a functional way with the right words and structure, and it was surprisingly quick and enjoyable as a process. I’d always been put off, I think, because I couldn’t get the pieces to fit together, but I guess it takes a particular way of looking at things to break past that”.
Then there’s James Bishop, founder of podcast production outfit OneFinePlay — James came to the meal with 9others last week (he’s in the photo below) and when I asked him about Robbie he was typically candid, but no less positive…
“When you told me you’d made a podcast, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was blown away. Robbie knows how to pull a host of disparate pieces together to make something cohesive and compelling. I’ve worked with him on a new business endeavour I’m building, and he just cuts away all the crap to find the thing that actually matters”.
A little more from the man himself
I asked Robbie to put something in his own words and he shared this…
“It’s always hardest to talk about yourself as I will now adeptly demonstrate. But then it’s also important to recognise that’s often the case. I’ve always enjoyed listening to what others are trying (and struggling) to do so I can translate that into something simple but effective. I used to do that for global businesses like PlayStation, Lego and Red Bull working in agencies, but I’ve since been privileged to work with startups, charities, investors, inventors, politicians, publishers and others to help them make the most of what they have to offer, especially when they’ve been stuck for a while. Another perspective is always useful to spot something that hasn’t quite made it to the surface, and that’s ultimately, what I seem to be good at. That and eating Tunnock’s Caramel Wafers”.
So whether you need a creative brain to crack a particular problem or help you produce something beautiful, or especially if you need help articulating the value of your business or your own personal brand, I’d recommend a chat with Robbie. He’s always welcoming and happy share advice from his attic in Glasgow!
