Finding the writing habit you’ve always dreamed of
We first came across Bec Evans in 2019 when she wrote about 9others in ‘How to have a happy hustle’, and it was Bec who suggested we talk to Alison Jones to explore writing a book about 9others which, as you’ll see below, we definitely did!
Bec and Chris Smith have now written, ‘Written, How to keep writing and build a habit that lasts’ and it’s a terrific collection of stories full of tried and tested advice from their years of helping thousands of writers of all kinds overcome writer’s block and focus on building the discipline needed to get their creativity out into the world.
Writing is hard
But worthwhile. And entirely in your control. In their book Bec and Chris lay out that writing is sort of simple (writers ‘just’ type words onto the page…!) but being a writer and getting better at it comes from the hard work of forming good habits. As we all know good habits take discipline, which means you have to set goals, set aside time, get started and know when to stop!
Break it down
Lots of people want to write but they think it ought to come out perfectly straight away so they never get going. Split into three parts, the book shares what’s needed:
The Approach
Breaking rules, making rules and understanding that you do need rules but they should be your rules and not someone else’s.
Start Writing
How to plan and prepare your writing time — this could be every day or a binge, but you have to plan.
Keep Writing
After being disciplined in the above you’ll have written a lot, found out if you actually like writing and found out what it is you like to write. Fantastic. Keep going.

In other news
As you may have seen on LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and Matthew’s blog we’ve written a book about 9others!
Here’s the blurb:
If you could sit down to dinner with some of the world's most ambitious startup entrepreneurs, what would you ask them?
Since 2011, 9others has hosted over 5,000 entrepreneurs at 500 events in over 45 cities around the world and asked one simple question: what's keeping you up at night? We’ve heard the challenges that entrepreneurs all around the world have faced; their thinking and the behavioural traits that helped them overcome those challenges.
In this book, 9others founders Katie Lewis and Matthew Stafford will help you discover the questions you should be asking yourself as you start and scale your own start up, and why you should go on your own journey to find your 9others.
You can pre-order your copy here. And if you do please email matthew@9others.com with your postal address and we’ll send you some 9others goodies.
